Mary Cassatt figure au rang des grands peintres impressionnistes. Née à Pittsburg (USA) en 1844, elle s’éteint en 1926 en Picardie.
Bravant les interdits familiaux, elle choisit de vivre de sa peinture. Elle devient l’amie de Pissarro, Clemenceau, Mallarmé, etc. Elle est à l’origine de la conquête de l’Amérique par les impressionnistes, en incitant les grands collectionneurs à acheter les toiles de ses amis peintres.
Guy Vadepied, ancien parlementaire passionné d’histoire de l’art, s’est intéressé à cette femme si méconnue en France, qui a marqué l’histoire de la peinture.
